Change the servings, and the steps follow

Cooking for two from a recipe for four, or for six from a recipe for two? Set the number of servings and Smaquli converts everything.

The problem

The recipe serves four; there are two of us.

Halving seems easy, until you get to half an egg, to 0.375 teaspoons of salt, or to a step that still says "add 400 ml cream". And when you double a recipe, twice the salt is often just too much.

How Smaquli solves it

Try it with our ramen

Choose the number of servings, from 1 to 20. Every ingredient scales in its own way, and the amounts in the steps follow. Try it below, from 1 to 8.

Example
Red curry ramen with dumplings, pak choi and coconut milk
2 servings

Ingredients

  • 2eggs
  • 1onion
  • 2 tbspred curry paste
  • 400 mlcoconut milk
  • 1star anise
  • 1 tspsalt
  • 200 gramen noodles
  • coriander, to taste

From step 3: Pour in 400 ml coconut milk and 500 ml chicken stock. Add 1 star anise, 1 tbsp fish sauce and 1 tsp salt, and let it simmer gently for 10 minutes.

In the app

One tap on plus, and everything scales

The amounts follow in the list and in the steps, and each ingredient rounds the way you’d measure it in the kitchen.

The app is in Dutch for now. English is on its way.

From 4 to 8 people and back to 7: everything scales, and 1 lime becomes 2.
  1. From 4 to 6 people: everything scales, the curry paste a little less.
  2. The amounts are in the steps, and where there’s a time, a timer is ready.

The rules, with examples

From the app’s tests, for a recipe that serves 2. This page calculates the results below with the same code as the app.

What else follows along

The steps
If it says "Brown 400 g mince", for 5 people it says "Brown 1 kg mince". No looking back at the list.
Sensible numbers
Grams and ml below 10 to the nearest 1, up to 250 to the nearest 5, up to 1000 to the nearest 10 and above that to the nearest 50. Spoons in quarters. You’ll never see 237 g.
A hint for big jumps
If you cook for more than twice as many people, or for fewer than half, you get a hint about the pan and the times. With one button, AI checks the method for you.
On the shopping list
When you put the recipe on the list, the number of servings goes with it.

What it doesn’t do (yet)

  • Smaquli doesn’t convert times or pan size by itself. That’s why big jumps come with a hint, and you can have the method checked.

Questions

How many servings can I choose?

From 1 to 20.

Why doesn’t the salt simply double?

You don’t taste salt and spices in proportion. Smaquli scales them more gently: for 2.5 times as many people, the salt goes up about 2.2 times, rounded to a quarter teaspoon. Scaling down is proportional.

Does changing servings cost anything?

No, it’s unlimited, on Free and on Premium. Only having the method checked counts towards the 2 a month on Free.

Does it work for recipes I type myself?

Yes. Every recipe in your book has separate ingredients, even if you type or say it yourself. So every recipe can be scaled.
