Save recipes, wherever you find them

A link, a message from a friend, or the recipe that only lives in your mum’s head. Smaquli turns it into a proper recipe, with separate ingredients and steps.

The problem

I saved it somewhere, but where?

Recipes come from everywhere: a recipe site, a message in the family group, a video, a note on the fridge. Each sits somewhere else, in a different form. A bookmark only remembers where it was, and you can’t search a screenshot.

How Smaquli solves it

Paste a link and see what happens

Choose how to bring the recipe in. Smaquli reads it, pulls out the ingredients and steps and puts it on a review screen. There you see everything, fix whatever isn’t right, and then it’s in your book.

Ready to review

Recipe site

1 cup heavy cream · 7 oz penne · 2 cups spinach

Creamy spinach pasta

serves 2

Ingredients

  • 200 g penne
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 60 g spinach
  • 240 ml double cream
  • 50 g Parmesan
  • pepper, to taste

Steps

  1. Cook 200 g penne until al dente.
  2. Soften 1 onion and 2 cloves garlic for 3 minutes.
  3. Wilt 60 g spinach and pour in 240 ml double cream.
  4. Toss with the pasta and 50 g Parmesan.

Converted to metric: 1 cup of cream became 240 ml, 7 oz penne became 200 g.

Save

In the app

From link to recipe in your book

Paste a link and Smaquli fetches the recipe. Then you check it: Smaquli points out what to look at, and only after saving is it in your book. The AI is good, but not infallible. That’s why you always take a quick look.

The app is in Dutch for now. English is on its way.

Paste a link and check the recipe before you save it. The wait has been cut out.
  1. Tap the plus: speak it, paste a link or text, or type it yourself.
  2. You check it first. It goes into your book only when you tap Opslaan (save).

Gran’s recipe, spoken

Some recipes aren’t written down anywhere. Say them the way you’d tell them. Smaquli keeps asking until it’s a recipe someone else could cook too.

Example

YouMy gran always made pea soup. Split peas, a bunch of celery, a leek, two carrots and a smoked sausage, and then you let it simmer for ages.

SmaquliHow many split peas do you use, and for how many people?

YouA 500 gram bag, for six people.

What Smaquli filled in is marked. Check it before you save.

Tell your recipe. Smaquli writes it down and asks about what’s missing.

Five ways to save a recipe

Paste a link
Smaquli reads the recipe from the site: first from the data the site provides itself, otherwise from the text. It’s converted to grams, ml and °C, and every ingredient is split into amount, unit and name.
Share from another app
On Android, Smaquli appears in the share menu once it’s installed. On iPhone it works through a Shortcut with a personal key. Get started explains, step by step, how to set it up.
Paste text
For a recipe from a chat, or from a site that blocks fetching. Facebook and Pinterest work this way too.
Say it out loud
Tell the recipe, up to 5 minutes per recording. Smaquli writes it out and asks about whatever is missing: amounts, the number of servings, times and temperature. You answer by voice or by text. Tap Done and Smaquli fills in the rest with assumptions, which you’ll see marked.
Type it yourself
Type "200 g diced chicken breast" and Smaquli turns it into amount, unit, ingredient and note. You can make groups ("For the sauce"), drag steps into place and add photos from your camera or gallery.
Always reviewed first
Nothing goes into your book unseen. And if you paste a link you’ve saved before, Smaquli tells you.

What it doesn’t do (yet)

  • Importing a photo, such as a page from a cookbook, isn’t possible (yet).
  • Facebook and Pinterest don’t work with a link; paste the text instead.
  • Some recipe sites block fetching. Then you paste the text, too.
  • Recipes are saved in Dutch for now, even if they were in English.

Questions

Does it work with every recipe site?

With most. Smaquli first reads the data a site provides itself, otherwise the text of the page. Some sites block fetching; then you copy the recipe text and paste it.

What if Smaquli reads something wrong?

You see every recipe on a review screen first. You fix whatever isn’t right there, before it goes into your book.

How long can a spoken recipe be?

Up to 5 minutes per recording. Then Smaquli asks about whatever is missing, and you answer by voice or by text.

Does saving count towards the Free limit?

Importing does: on Free you import 2 recipes a month, by link, video, text or voice. Typing a recipe yourself doesn’t count as an import. In total you keep up to 10 recipes on Free; on Premium there’s no limit.
